Guiyang Jazz
This is Guiyang Jazz. Martin, an Australian, has loved music all his life. He plays with Chinese musicians and brings his jazzy friends up from Australia to play at the Obsession Jazz bar, on Wenchang Beilu. Live Jazz ( Alt Link ) . It is right across from the Wenchang Castle in the old part of town. It is a multicultural experience with Chinese and foreigners together in the same Jazz Bar venue.
Martin has drawn from many parts of the globe, including from England to Australia. Guiyang Jazz, like all Jazz has it roots in the south of the USA. Martin even pulls in Americans to play drums, horns, and one of my favorites, the zydeco. 
The zydeco is sometimes referred to as a Louisiana washboard Zydeco ( Alt Link ).

Guiyang Virtual Reality Theme Park
This photo reminds me of a Godzilla movie.
The Guiyang Virtual Reality Theme Park may already be open. I have been curious since going by a big transformer, which I took to be about seven stories high when I recently posted it to Facebook. In fact it is about seventeen stories high. It’s so big that you can’t tell how big it is. After trying to take photos from the bus, I found that the Guiyang East Bus Station provided an adequate view. It can also give perspective by looking at the signs and cars in front of it. My sister complained that I haven’t kept her up to date on Guiyang happenings because she has been reading about this project in the West. I checked China Daily and found this article:

Well if this is what it takes to get my sister to come back to Guiyang for a visit, then I say it is a billion rmb well spent!
I’ll try to find out more about this place and post it here. Meanwhile, Guiayang is racking up a number of impressive man-made firsts: 1) There’s the worlds tallest bridge http://www.tourguizhou.com/guizhous-tallest-bridge-%E6%9C%80%E9%AB%98%E7%9A%84%E6%A1%A5/ , 2) The worlds biggest telescope: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/life/2017-11/20/content_34752752.htm , 3) Worlds first Virtual Reality Theme Park, and 4) The worlds first seventeen story transformer. I finally found out what the Chinese call him — JiCheRen . Plane, car, man . . . Makes sense.
Root Art at Shirley’s
Artist Wu Xiao Yon and Jack.
The Shirley Gallery had the opening of a new exhibit, Root Art, on January 12. These are the sculptures of Wu Xiao Yon. They are created from the art of mother nature (and the hand of Artist Wu), that is buried in the dirt, usually unseen. Artist Wu took maximum advantage of nature’s art in his sculptures. Whatever you do, don’t throw that old stump away . . .
Jack is intrigued by the head with the ear ring.
The eagle head in the lower right is part of an eagle sculpture that pictures really don’t do justice. It must be seen in person to be appreciated.

Invitation to our Holiday Party
A message from the Administrator (Jack) of this web site:
The www.tourguizhou.com website is cooperating with Shirley Gallery to create a Holiday Party on behalf of local artists. The cost is 100 RMB per person . This covers all the food, drinks, door prizes, and entertainment. The event is December 27 (Tuesday evening), 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The location is on the river at Jian Daojie 72. All proceeds from ticket sales are dedicated to paying the bills of the Gallery, and thereby support the art community of Guiyang. Many artists are permitted to display their work for free, and patrons are permitted to tour the gallery free of charge. The Gallery (second floor) and Restaurant (on the first floor) will be closed to the public on the 27th. This is a private party and is intended to support the artist community of Guizhou.
We will have grape wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee, and tea to drink. Here are some examples of the food to expect:

We are providing a Wechat link so you can buy your tickets online through Wechat. This is new for us, so we need your patience. You will have to scan the Wechat link. This is Diana’s account, so if you are not Diana’s Friend, then you must first become a Friend, then we can compete the transaction.

Yin Shi Long at Shirley Gallery
The art of Yin Shi Long is on display at the Shirley Gallery through the end of this month. The name of the Exhibition is loosely translated as “Frameless”
Shirley gave a big dinner for patrons of her gallery on opening night, Thursday, November 26, 2016. Artist Yin was present along with his uncle, Artist Yin Guang Zhong, who was early inspiration to Shi Long. Yin Shi Long is both a sculptor and a painter as shown in his works below.
The Gallery Hours are 11AM to 6PM, every day. Since Shirley has a restaurant on the first floor of her building, she can host private parties at her gallery upon request.

Shirley’s Private Gallery of Guiyang
I first came to Shirley’s gallery on November 26 and met the beautiful proprietor, Shirley (Xiao Li). She had an exhibition of the local artist named Yin Shi Long. His art and sculptures were very impressive, and I found myself having dinner with a variety of artists in her restaurant. Shirley’s story is as interesting as Artist Yin’s work. Shirley has opened a second floor gallery in one of the most 
exclusive locations in Guiyang, downtown on Jian Dao Jie, beside the river. Shirley is able to support the artists of Guizhou because of her successful clothing business and restaurant. The restaurant is on the first floor and the gallery is directly above.
She is so successful that she has her own pillows with her face on it. She also has T-Shirts, batteries, silk scarves, postcards and my favorite mouse pad.
Shirley takes her inspiration from her art teacher, Chen HongQi. He has been an established artist in Guiyang many years, and some of his art is shown below, taken from his recently published book.

The gallery is supporting the artist community of Guizhou, having featured the art of seventeen local artists. These artists are not charged any money for this premier location. Shirley is an art collector and often accepts gifts of art from the artists that she helps.
Shirley urges everyone to buy the art to help maintain the artist community. We discussed the art scene extensively over coffee in her gallery on Tuesday (Dec 6, 2016). Interested patrons of Guizhou Art can write tourguizhou@gmail.com for more information.

Deng’s 80th Birthday
On the 11th of November the Master Artist, teacher of many Guizhou artists, had his 80th birthday. His students gathered to honor him and thank him. A special commemorative book of his art production was created by his students for the the Master and the other participants. Deng Chuanqi was born in Guizhou and mastered the Chinese seal block art, as well as the ancient calligraphy. He was a middle school teacher and inspired many Guizhou artists to excel in all kinds of art. Many of the famous Guizhou artists owe their teacher a debt that cannot be repaid. He did more
than 
inspire students. After retirement he continued to inspire the Guizhou art community in many ways.

Art of De Deng — Chan Yi Qi Xi
De Deng is not just an artist. He is a monk. He studies Budha, philosophy of all religions, aesthetics, Chinese Caligraphy, modern art, traditional Chinese painting, and “action art”. Before he became a monk he spent a year and a half helping clean the polluted environment in the Dian Lake, of Yunnan Province. He has tried to educate people about taking care of the earth. I was happy to visit his art exhibition at the 219 Gallery. His current art is abstract style and was displayed on October 18 to 22 at the 219 Gallery on Baoshan Beilu, in the He House Hotel (Heshe Jiudian).
There are too many paintings to show here, but photos of the event are below:
Deng Chuan Qi shown below attended the exhibition of his former student. When Deng was younger, he was a Guiyang art teacher. He inspired a lot of students to become artists, including De Deng. Many of the Guiyang artists of today were students of Deng in middle school. They met their old teacher at the exhibition. Also shown is Diana, our interpreter, one of students on the island who studies calligraphy, and a cat, who really seemed to appreciate the event.
After the event I was invited to the artist’s home and studio. He has two students living in his compound, which is on an island. Ironically, the island has no water around it right now because recent construction has resulted in the river being drained. De Deng is an environmentalist and his island retreat is no longer an island.
Soccer — A Guizhou Issue ?
I have friends that are very into soccer. They play and even talk about coaching kids. The article below came as kind of a lightening bolt. China’s Soccer Goal
Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s new president, has ambitious plans. They are, however, easy to execute and may help further the goals of some of the soccer body’s major sponsors.
Planned total of teams in World Cup: 48
For a start, Infantino is pledging to invest $4 billion to increase the number of football participants to 60 percent of the world’s population, from the current 45 percent. Guess what: He doesn’t have to spend the money. More Chinese kicking a ball around could get him to his target in one move.
Coincidentally, that would fit well with the strategy of Wang Jianlin, China’s second-richest man, whose Dalian Wanda Group in March became the first major sponsor of FIFA since a criminal corruption scandal overwhelmed
the organization and led to the ouster of longtime president Joseph “Sepp” Blatter. Jack Ma, the nation’s richest man, followed suit in courting the federation.
When he announced his cash injection into the soccer authority, Wang said that having multiple sponsors “will help China bid to host the World Cup.”
That remains to be seen, but another of the aims Infantino laid out on Friday may at least help the world’s most populous nation return to the World Cup, in which it participated just once, without winning any games. The new president plans to increase the number of teams in the event to 48 from the current 32.
Ranked 78 by FIFA, China still has to work on its national team to reach the World Cup, even with the greater number of participants. But from a statistical perspective, a 50 percent increase in the number of available seats increases the odds that the nation makes it.
That’s just what Xi Jinping needed. The avowed soccer fan has declared football a national priority and harbors an ambition to see the country host and win the World Cup. Naturally, it makes sense for people in the private sector to help him get there.
The China team’s recent losses to Syria (really) and Uzbekistan indicate that the only way is up. As FIFA continues to grapple with the fallout from the corruption scandal, it needs supporters with deep pockets such as those in China. This is the start of a long friendship.
